How immigrant parents affect their children is an interesting research topic to focus on, because this effect is different than regular parents having an effect on their children.
I plan to inform the obstacles many face because of language (specifically English). Obstacles like unfairness, bullying, and one’s social outlook.
How well a immigrant’s integrate into American society, in particular Asian immigrants. I picked this topic because of writing an essay on “Mother Tongue” and analyzing it’s rhetorical techniques and how Tan employed them to convey her message to her readers.
My Research topic will be about Immigration and how it affects society as a whole in the U.S whether it be good or bad. I want to make known about how immigration affects the U.S and debunk any misconceptions people may have. Also, make include immigration from 2 perspectives, people who are against immingration and those who are for it.
I want to explore why people react negatively to individuals with certain accents, but positively to other accents.
This is a topic that I haven’t read or learned about, I think it’s a topic that should be discussed because I have seen many situations where this sadly occurred. It would be interesting to see as to why people react differently to how a person speaks, is it something that we naturally do because as humans we naturally judge or is it based off how one grew up? Very interesting topic, Good Luck!
The topic I’ve shown an interest in is the stigmatization that immigrants face while adapting to a new country and another language. It seems to be a common struggle for many, and the direct descendants of these immigrants are often judged by the way their parents speak, so much that English proficiency is used as a means to mask their cultural background
I would like to discuss the role that accent and overall fluency in a language plays in one’s perception by the society. Why is society so judgmental on topics regarding language?
A topic I have in mind is the use of affirmative action and examining if it’s still necessary in education and/or workplace.
The obstacles and hardship for immigrants and non-native speakers
The obstacles of Asian immigrants’ perception of the English language. I have read Amy Tan and have seen some articles on this topic while doing my research paper.
A research topic I might be interested in is how language might affect your education. I got this idea from Amy Tan when she talk about how Asian American are stereotyped that they are good at math and science but not English. She also said, “And perhaps they also have teachers who are steering them away from writing and into math and science, which is what happened to me.” She also went on, on how language spoken in immigrant family might affect their results in school.
Standard language is a topic that interests me and it relate to the article of “Mother tongue” and I feel as though many people that migrate to America faces the challenge of trying to learn the standard language of the country in order to be able to communicate with others.
I agree with your statement that many immigrants struggle to learn the standard language of the country. I think your topic focuses son the power of the English language over minority languages.
I plan to discuss and research topics of discrimination, unequal treatment, lack of empathy, and opportunities for people that speak their own unique form of English that is rejected by members of our society.
I feel like this is a great topic to discuss and do research for, as I experience part of this rejection when I first came to the US and I wasn’t able to go to the schools I want because of my language.
I agree because this a major issue in society and people tend to discriminate against others since they aren’t similar to them.
Many immigrants face hardships due to a language barrier in which they either have a very strong accent, or speak broken english. I wanted to take a deeper dive into the expectations/Judgement of accents. How exactly does your accent/way of speaking affect people’s perception of you? Why must that be the case?
I really like what I guess you plan on doing with your research essay. Asking very though-provoking questions and wanting to dive deeper into the topic will make a good base on which you can stake your research and expand on your ideas.
I think this is a great topic. I explored this issue in our literacy narratives, so I have a good idea of where you are headed. I focused on how my mother’s accent was negatively perceived by others.
I believe that this is a good research topic that relates to the language of politics. An accent is also something that many people frowned upon and we need to move to change this.
A topic that I urge to be discussed and investigated in class is “Social Expectations”. Though, I did do Safwat Saleem and his text on the notion of normal and its affect on social expectations, I still believe this is a major issue in the general public today because this can lead to a cause of racism, dominance, and other political language terms like oppression or discrimination.
Obstacles facing immigrants by society when learning English.
I feel that this topic covered a lot of topics and issues (Races, languages, educational systems, identities, cultures) that I want to bring together and combine them throughout my experience and to show how all of these topics are really very connected to each other when it comes to immigrants because just the word immigrant in itself holds a lot it means a lot to a person to change everything in his life to be better but much way harder and despite that not every one of them are appreciated. The way that immigrants are treated is unfair, they face racism everywhere around them, and from the community perspective this is what should be done they are seen less in everything work, education, healthcare almost everything, and all of this is for their race and LANGUAGE.
I think it is a very good topic since there is a lot to cover and many hardships that immigrants may encounter. It all starts off with the new environment and the interactions, some may not be as positive as others. Language barriers are another obstacle. So I really like your topic since there are multiple different things you can talk about.
contradiction between what the country offers and how “it” is really applied.
identity, culture, access, education
I want my audience to understand the representation of Africans in the African American community and vice versa. I choose this topic, because of the stigma that Americans tend to put people of African ancestry through a similar perspective.
I agree because Americans don’t put people of African descent on an equal level. Thus, why they are discriminated against the most in the general public.
I think the obstacles between 2nd generation immigrants and the connectivity to their culture and language should be explored. The feeling of diaspora that many children of immigrant parents feel needed to be brought to attention. This struggle that many kids face can cause the decay of a culture.
I agree with this heavily. The culture within some of our generations can be drained or disappear entirely mostly due to the fact that, in my case, we don’t live in our native country. So we adopt the culture of the country we are currently residing in. Great topic and I’m interested to see where this goes.
I found a scholarly article that focuses on how Latino immigrant descendants often pass as English proficient, which highlights the English language as a means of prestige and higher status.
